Staying out overnight on the water is one of the best things you can do with a boat near Amsterdam. The catch is that the postcard-pretty centre is the wrong place to try it. Here's where to point the bow when you want a quiet night instead of a busy quay.

Why the centre mostly isn't an option
Free public quays in the city are short-stop tie-ups, not overnight berths. Many are time-limited, plenty are signed "Verboden af te meren" (no mooring), and the centre is the emission-free zone, so a combustion boat can't legally sit there overnight anyway. Tie up for the night on a central canal and you're risking a fine or a tow, however quiet it looks at midnight.
So overnight comes down to three honest options: a marina berth, a designated transit harbour, or calmer water outside the centre where an overnight stay is actually allowed. Always confirm on site, because this is exactly the kind of thing the signs decide.
Marinas: the simplest overnight
The reliable answer is a marina (jachthaven). You pay for the berth, but you get shore power, water, a toilet and shower, and somewhere your boat is meant to spend the night. Filter the map to marinas to see berthing operators around the city and its edges, then call ahead, because summer space goes quickly.
The Weesp transit harbour
A well-kept option just upriver is the Passantenhaven in Weesp, between the Vecht and the Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal. Passing through without mooring is free; to stay you need a vignette, and overnight is charged at around €1.80 per linear metre of boat, per night, paid online, for a maximum of three consecutive nights. Boats over 10 metres can't moor there. It has water taps, shore power, waste-water disposal, and a toilet and shower building, with room for roughly 40 boats and a harbourmaster on site through the season. Calmer water to aim for
If you want quiet without leaving the boat club world behind, head away from the centre:
- The lakes to the south-west, the Nieuwe Meer and the Sloterplas, reached along the Kostverlorenvaart, are open and calm.
- Noord and the Amstel south towards Ouderkerk trade canal-house density for room and greenery.
- The Western Islands (Westelijke Eilanden) are a pocket of calm right on the edge of the centre for an evening, though not for sleeping aboard.

Overnight mooring rewards planning. Book a berth or check the transit-harbour space before you set off, arrive with daylight to spare, and don't gamble on finding a legal overnight spot in the centre, because there mostly isn't one. Carry a valid vignette and read every sign.
