Summer is when Amsterdam's water is at its best and its busiest. On a warm weekend the centre canals turn into a slow-moving traffic jam of rental boats, and an open sloop with no shade becomes a frying pan by mid-afternoon. None of that has to spoil your day. With a bit of timing and a plan, you get the good version: cool water, quiet corners, a swim, and a cold drink. Here's how a local skipper plays the season.
The short version
Go early or late, head out of the centre when it's hot and busy, carry shade and water, and swim only where it's meant for swimming. Do those four things and a summer day on the water is a joy rather than a slog. The rest of this guide is the detail.
Pick your moment
Timing is the single biggest lever you have. The centre is calmest in the early morning and on weekday evenings, and busiest on warm weekend afternoons, when the rental fleet is all out at once. A summer evening, with the light going gold and the day-trippers heading in, is the nicest window of all.
Watch the weather too. A flat, warm evening is perfect; a windy day turns the open water like the IJ and the lakes choppy and tiring. Check the forecast, and if a heatwave lands, treat midday like the Mediterranean does: get off the water or into the shade between roughly noon and three.
Escape the centre when it's mobbed
The trick most visitors miss: the crowds thin out fast once you leave the canal belt. When the middle of town is gridlocked, point the bow somewhere with room:
- West, towards the lakes. The Kostverlorenvaart route strings the Oud-West canals down to the Nieuwe Meer and the Sloterplas, open water with space to breathe.
- Noord and the IJ. A different, bigger feel (cross the IJ with care, it's working harbour water).
- The Amstel, south-east. More room and some of the best waterside terraces.
- The Western Islands (Westelijke Eilanden), a quiet, pretty corner right next to the centre.

Beat the heat: get some shade
An open boat offers zero protection from a Dutch summer sun that's stronger than it feels. Rig some shade before you go, a canopy, a bimini, even a simple sun sail, and you double the comfort of the day. On the water itself, the narrow grachten lined with tall canal houses hold cool shade for much of the day, while the open lakes are full sun. Mix the two: shaded canals when it's blazing, open water for the breeze in the evening.
And the obvious ones that people still forget: sunscreen, hats, and far more drinking water than you think you'll need. Glare off the water burns you twice.
Where to actually swim
A swim is the best part of a hot day afloat, but not in the central canals. They're busy navigation channels with boats and water taxis all day, swimming there is both unsafe and not allowed, and the water quality isn't checked. Head instead to a designated swim spot where the water is monitored:
- The Nieuwe Meer and the Sloterplas in the west, easy to reach by boat.
- Gaasperplas in the south-east and Het Twiske up north, proper swimming lakes with shores.

Provisions for a hot day
Half the pleasure of your own boat is bringing the day with you. Stock up before you cast off, or top up en route at a boat-reachable shop: cold drinks, ice, water, and something to eat, plus the sunscreen you forgot. Filter to supermarkets for shops you can provision at by boat, and other for the odd drinking-water tap. A cool box of ice does more for a hot afternoon than almost anything.
Share the water nicely in peak season
Summer puts everyone on the water at once, a lot of them in rentals on their first ever outing, so a little courtesy goes a long way:
- Mind your wake. Slow down past moored boats, swimmers, and smaller craft. The 6 km/h limit exists for a reason.
- Keep right and give way in good time, especially in the busy narrow stretches.
- Stay sober at the helm. The limit on the water is the same 0.5 promille as on the road, and enforcement is out in summer.
- Keep the noise down near homes, especially in the evening.
