Privacy Policy
Last updated 31 July 2026
This policy explains what Floating Today collects and how we use it. We keep it minimal: an account is optional, and there are no advertising trackers.
What we collect
- Email address, only if you choose to sign up (for early access and curated-spot updates).
- Optional details, if you sign up as a boat owner (“Captain”), you may also give your name and boat name. These are optional.
- On-device settings: your map preferences are stored locally in your browser, not in an account. You can clear them at any time by clearing your browser storage.
- Aggregated usage analytics: we use privacy-focused, cookieless analytics to understand how the site is used and improve it. These are aggregated and are not linked to your name or email.
We do not use advertising or cross-site tracking cookies, and our analytics set no cookies on your device.
Your account (optional)
You can use the whole map without an account: your saved spots and routes live on your device. If you want them to follow you to another phone, you can create a free account. Signing in is passwordless, with a one-time code sent to your email or with Google. We never handle a password.
An account stores only what you give it and what you save:
- the email you sign in with;
- optional profile details: a display name, boat name, your role and power type, and an avatar colour;
- your saved spots, routes, and home spot;
- any trips you are on, and any traces you have chosen to record. There is a section on those below.
We never sell this and we don’t share it. Saving something is private to you: it is never posted anywhere public.
Trips, live location, and your traces
A trip is a plan you share with other people. If you create one or join one, the people on that trip can see the plan, the stops, and your name and boat name if you have set them.
There are two separate switches on the live map, and they do different things. You can turn on either, both, or neither.
Share where I am. While a trip is on, this lets the people on that trip see your position, and only while you have the live map open on your screen. It is off every time you open the map, including after a reload, so you turn it on each time you want it.
Your live position is never saved. It is not written to our database. It passes to the rest of your crew and is gone. When you turn sharing off, close the screen, or lock your phone, it stops.
Because a phone stops reporting when its screen locks, other people see how old your last position is, and it disappears from their map after a few minutes. Nobody is shown a position we cannot stand behind.
Record my trace. This is the one that keeps something. Turn it on and we save the line you travel, so you can look back at the route you actually took. It is off every time you open the map, and turning on sharing does not turn it on.
A trace belongs to you. Only you can see it, until you decide otherwise. You can show it to the people on that trip, and you can delete it whenever you like. Deleting your account deletes every trace with it.
We keep a trace until you delete it. We do not use it for anything else: it is not analysed, it is not shared with anyone outside the choices you make above, and it is not sold.
If someone is removed from a trip they lose access to it straight away, along with any traces that were shown to that crew, and their invite link stops working.
An invite link is like a key. Anyone you send it to can open the plan and join, and can pass it on. If you want to stop that, the person who started the trip can replace the link at any time.
How we use it
- To send you a short welcome when you sign up, and the occasional curated-spot drop after that. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can opt out any time.
- To understand demand and improve the curated spot data.
Consent
When you submit your email through one of our forms, you consent to us storing it and contacting you about Floating Today, and you confirm you’ve read this Privacy Policy and our Terms. You can withdraw consent any time: just email us to unsubscribe and we’ll remove you.
Where it’s stored
Your data is stored and processed by reputable third-party providers we use for hosting, email delivery and privacy-focused analytics, located in the EU/EEA or under appropriate safeguards. We take reasonable measures to protect it, and we do not sell it.
Your rights
You can ask us to access, correct, or delete your data, or to stop contacting you. Email hello@floating.today and we’ll take care of it.
If you have an account, you can also do this yourself from the Captain tab. Export my data downloads everything your account holds as a file, and Delete account permanently removes your account and all your saved data. Deleting your account also unsubscribes you from our emails.
Children
The site isn’t directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect their data.
