The Amsterdam boating season doesn't really end, it just goes quiet and cold. Somewhere around late October the question arrives: what do you do with the boat now? Leave it in the water? Haul it out? Do you need to winterise at all on a small electric sloop? Getting this wrong is how a cracked engine block or a ruined battery greets you in spring. Getting it right is mostly a half-day of simple jobs. Here's how to put your boat to bed for an Amsterdam winter.
As ever, this is practical orientation rather than a manufacturer's manual. Check your engine and battery maker's own winter guidance, and when in doubt, let a yard do it.
What winter actually does to a boat
The season runs roughly from 1 November to 1 April, and the enemy is mostly frost. Water expands as it freezes, and water trapped in an engine's cooling passages, a pipe, or a water tank can crack metal and split hoses. On top of that, winter brings damp (mould and corrosion below decks) and flat batteries that can be ruined by months sitting discharged in the cold.
Amsterdam's canals rarely freeze solid the way they once did, so a hard Elfstedentocht winter is unlikely. But a sharp cold snap still happens, and it only takes one to do the damage. Plan for frost even if it doesn't come.
In the water or out? The storage choice
Your first decision is whether the boat stays afloat or comes ashore (op de kant). Rough costs, charged per square metre of the boat and quoted as a general guide for Dutch yards (Amsterdam yards vary, so always ask):
- In the water is the cheapest, around €19.50 per m² for the whole season (or roughly €6.50 per m² a month). Simplest for a small boat, but you still have to winterise against frost, and you'll want to check the lines and bilge through the winter.
- Ashore on a trestle (bok), around €24 per m², usually including the lift out and a hull clean. Getting the hull out of the water and dry is kinder to it and lets you check and antifoul in spring.
- Outdoor covered or in a shed, around €39.50 per m², and indoor heated halls from roughly €48.50 to €72.50 per m². More money, drier boat, best for anything wooden, classic, or valuable.
For our example small sloop, a 4.2 m boat of about 6.5 m² (the one from the vignette guide), that's roughly €125 to stay in the water for the season, or around €155 ashore with the lift and clean included. Yards offering this show up under marine services and marina on the map, and if you trailer your boat out yourself you'll want a boat ramp.
Those numbers are for storage alone. A full-service winter package is a different product and a different price: a friend with a 4.9 m boat and a 20 hp engine, kept in Amsterdam and partly fibreglass, was quoted around €1,000 for the lot. That covered collection on a trailer, dry storage elsewhere in the Netherlands, and the engine and general maintenance done over the winter. Against a season of hauling, storing and servicing it yourself that can be fair value, and it is worth ringing round: yards compete hard for winter work, so the second and third quote often beat the first.
Keeping your boat in the water through winter
Most small sloops in Amsterdam simply stay afloat, and it's the cheapest, easiest option. But "in the water" is not the same as "nothing to do". The canal around the hull doesn't warm the engine, the pipes, or the tanks, so you still winterise everything inside exactly as in the sections below. What's different is a handful of afloat-specific risks, and the first one sinks boats every winter:
- Rain and snow can sink an open boat. This is the classic Amsterdam winter loss: an uncovered sloep fills with weeks of rain and a dump of snow, sits lower, and goes under at its own mooring. Keep the cockpit drains clear, fit a cover that sheds water rather than pooling it, and make sure the boat can self-bail.
- Keep the bilge dry and don't trust the pump blindly. An automatic bilge pump needs a charged battery to run, and shore power may be off all winter, so it won't always save you. Check and bail after every spell of heavy weather. A battery monitor with Bluetooth earns its small cost here: you can read the charge from the quay as you walk past, and know whether the pump still has anything to run on.
- Leave slack in your lines. Water levels shift and a brief freeze moves the boat. Lines pulled tight chafe through or hold the boat down as the level changes. Double them up, add chafe protection, and leave a little give.
- Expect the odd freeze. A short cold snap can skin the canal with ice. For a sound small boat with slack lines that's usually harmless; some marinas run a bubbler or de-icer to keep water moving around the pontoons. Don't hack thick ice off the hull in a panic, just keep the boat floating freely.
- Visit it. A boat left afloat wants a look after storms and cold snaps: bail any water, check the lines and the cover, confirm it's sitting level. Ten minutes now and then beats a salvage bill.
Winterising a petrol or diesel engine
If your boat runs combustion, this is the part that prevents the expensive surprises:
- Fresh oil and filter. Change the oil before storage, not after. Old oil holds acids and moisture that corrode the engine over a still winter.
- Drain the cooling system and add antifreeze. Run marine-grade propylene glycol antifreeze through the cooling circuit. Never use car (ethylene glycol) antifreeze: it's highly toxic to aquatic life, and in a canal city that matters the moment a drop reaches the water.
- Treat the fuel. Top up the tank to cut condensation, add a fuel stabiliser, and run it through. A note on modern fuel: ordinary biodiesel (FAME) degrades over a long layup and can clog filters in the cold, so where you can, lay up on B7 or HVO instead.
- Fog the cylinders to coat the internals against corrosion, and check hoses, the impeller, and belts while you're in there.
Electric boats: easier, but mind the battery
Good news if you've gone electric (see converting your boat to electric): there's no fuel to stabilise, no oil, no cooling circuit to drain, and far less to go wrong. The one thing that matters is the battery:
- Lithium (LiFePO4): store it at a partial charge, around 40 to 60%, not full and not empty. That's the sweet spot for surviving a long cold spell with the least wear. Follow your battery maker's exact figure.
- Lead-acid: charge it fully (a charged battery resists freezing far better than a flat one), and ideally keep it on a smart trickle charger, or remove it and store it somewhere frost-free.
- Either way, don't leave a battery sitting flat in the cold all winter. That's how you kill it.
Water, damp, and the hull
Whatever your engine:
- Drain every water system (fresh-water tank, pipes, pump, toilet, bilge) and run non-toxic antifreeze through what won't fully drain. Trapped water is the classic frost crack.
- Keep air moving. Open lockers, lift cushions, and use a cover that sheds water without sealing the boat into a damp box. A little ventilation beats mould.
- Clean and check the hull, especially if it's coming out. Spring is the time to antifoul, but a clean now means less work later.
- Take the valuables home, and ideally the outboard with them. Electronics, cushions, and life jackets resent damp, and a motor left aboard all winter is a theft target as much as a frost one.
- Soft furnishings go home, and we learned this the expensive way. We left the cushions aboard for a single month one winter, water found its way in, and every one of them had to be replaced before the season. A dry cupboard, a storage box, or the sheltered end of a balcony all beat the driest boat under the best cover.
The Amsterdam specifics
A few things that are particular to keeping a boat here:
- A small sloop can usually stay in the water, which is what many owners do (see keeping your boat in the water through winter above for how to do it without a spring surprise).
- Your vignette runs by the calendar year. A binnenhavengeld vignette expires on 31 December, so storing over winter doesn't extend it: you'll buy a fresh one in spring before you sail. The vignette guide has the detail.
- Where to haul out: Amsterdam has yards with cranes and slipways, but space books up. Sort your spot before the autumn rush rather than in the first frost.
If you do nothing else
For a cheap little open boat where a full winterisation feels like overkill, do at least this: get the water out (bilge dry, any water system drained), sort the battery (charged and frost-free, or taken home), and cover it loosely so it breathes. That alone heads off the worst of the frost and damp damage. Everything above is how you protect a boat you've put real money into.
