About the event

Utrecht Canal Pride is the centrepiece of Utrecht Pride, a parade of around 50 decorated boats down the Oudegracht through the heart of the old city. The boats gather on the Catharijnesingel, pass the Weerdsluis into the Oudegracht, and run through the centre to the Ledig Erf, watched by tens of thousands from the bridges and the werven, the medieval two-level wharves unique to Utrecht that put spectators right at the water's edge. The 2027 edition of Utrecht Pride is on Saturday 5 June 2027; the parade is the Saturday centrepiece, with its exact start time (around 13:30 in recent years) confirmed by the organiser closer to the day. Taking part is for registered organisations, allotted or drawn by lottery, so it is not an event you join in your own boat. Everyone else watches free from the wharves and the bridges.

The organiser

The foundation behind Utrecht Pride. Its centrepiece is the Canal Pride, a parade of decorated boats down the Oudegracht through the old centre.

From the water

Utrecht's Canal Pride runs down the Oudegracht, the old canal whose quays sit at two levels, the street above and the werf (wharf) right at the water. Around 50 decorated boats parade through the centre while the crowds watch from the werf and the bridges, which puts spectators closer to the water than almost any parade. It is a boats-you-watch event, not one you join: the parade is registered, participating boats only, and the Oudegracht itself is a tight, low-bridged canal with very little public mooring, so coming by your own boat is hard and there is nowhere to tie up and stay.

How it works

Going to this one by boat

By boat: The parade is registered, participating boats only, entered by organisations and often drawn by lottery, so there is no turn-up-and-join path. The Oudegracht is low-bridged with very little public mooring, so plan to watch from the wharf, not from your own boat.

Free: Nothing to book. Free to watch from the werf (the Oudegracht's lower wharf level) and the bridges.

The route: Boats gather on the Catharijnesingel, pass the Weerdsluis into the Oudegracht, and parade through the centre to the Ledig Erf. In recent years it has started around 13:30 and run into the early evening; the organiser confirms the 2027 time closer to the day.

Where to moor

There is effectively no mooring for this. The Oudegracht is on Utrecht's shallow, low-clearance inner route with very limited public berths, and much of the wharf is under a long restoration programme with sections closed. Watch from the werf or a bridge rather than planning to arrive and tie up by boat.

Our take as floating people

A genuinely special one to watch, because of where you watch it from: the werf level of the Oudegracht sits right down on the water, so the boats pass almost at arm's length. Our honest note is that this is a watch-from-the-wharf event, not a bring-your-own-boat one. The parade is registered boats only, and the Oudegracht is a tight, low-bridged canal with almost nowhere to moor, so do not plan to arrive by boat. Come on foot, find a spot on the werf early, and let the parade come to you.

Don't miss the next one

Events like this need real planning, sometimes a captain's spot needs booking weeks out. Set a reminder, and we'll email you about this one and others like it.

Good to know

When is Utrecht Canal Pride 2027?

Utrecht Pride 2027 is on Saturday 5 June 2027, and the Canal Pride parade is its Saturday centrepiece. The exact parade start time (around 13:30 in recent years) is confirmed by the organiser closer to the day.

Where is Utrecht Canal Pride?

On the Oudegracht, the old canal through the centre of Utrecht. The boats gather on the Catharijnesingel, enter the Oudegracht by the Weerdsluis, and parade to the Ledig Erf. The best viewing is from the werven, the two-level wharves right at the water.

Can you join Utrecht Canal Pride in your own boat?

No. The parade is registered, participating boats only, entered by organisations and often drawn by lottery. There is no path to join in a private boat; everyone else watches from the wharves and bridges.

Can you watch from the water?

Barely. The Oudegracht is a tight, low-bridged canal with very little public mooring, and parts of the wharf are closed for restoration, so there is nowhere to tie up and stay. The werf and the bridges are where people watch.

More on the water

We list this as an event we think is worth knowing about. We're not the organiser, and these details aren't official. Stichting Utrecht Pride and the signs on the quay have the final say, so give them the final word. More in our Terms.
