New Year's Eve on the Water
The Amstel, by the Magere Brug, Amsterdam52.36570, 4.90240

About the event
New Year's Eve in Amsterdam, Oud en Nieuw, has no organiser on the water: it is the city's informal turn of the year, watched from bridges, quays and the odd boat. Two things shape it for 2026/27. First, fireworks: Amsterdam has banned private fireworks citywide since 2021, and a national consumer ban (the Wet veilige jaarwisseling) took effect on 1 August 2026, so only category F1 novelties like sparklers remain legal anywhere, the water included. Second, crowds: the Amstel around the Magere Brug is the traditional vantage point and gets shoulder to shoulder, with more people along the IJ near Centraal Station and the Oosterdok. The City designates security-risk areas where police may search for illegal fireworks, and runs the one official show, the land-based Electric Fireworks on Museumplein, not on the canals. We have not found any blanket boating ban on the water for the night, but check the City and the port's own channels before you set out.
The organiser
There is no single organiser for New Year's Eve on the water: it is the city's informal turn of the year. The City of Amsterdam sets the rules that shape the night, the fireworks ban and the security-risk areas, and runs the one official show, the land-based Electric Fireworks on Museumplein.
From the water
Oud en Nieuw (New Year's Eve) is not an event you join on the water so much as one you watch from it, and carefully. The classic vantage is the Amstel around the Magere Brug, with more crowds along the IJ and the Oosterdok. It is dark by late afternoon in midwinter and the water is cold, and the busy stretches fill with people, so if you go out at all, stay well clear of the packed bridges and quays rather than into them.
How it works
Going to this one by boat
If you go out: Midwinter means it is dark by late afternoon and the water is cold, so keep your navigation lights on, your speed down, and stay well clear of the packed bridges and quays. There is nothing laid on for boats.
The official show: The one organised event is the land-based Electric Fireworks light and laser show on Museumplein, roughly 22:00 to 00:30 with a countdown at midnight. It is not on the water.
Free: Nothing to book. Free to watch from the water, the banks and the bridges.

Where to moor
There is no mooring laid on, and the places people gather, the Amstel by the Magere Brug and the IJ front, are exactly the ones to avoid tying up in on the night. If you want to be on the water, pick a quiet quay away from the crowds, keep your navigation lights on, and keep clear of other traffic. As ever, the signs on the quay have the final say.
The landing steiger (aanlegsteiger, a wooden jetty) on the Amstel right in front of the H'ART Museum in the Centrum, with room for about 6 boats. Handy for a quick stop to step ashore for the museum or to swap crew. It doubles as a boarding point for canal tour boats, so it is often busy. Tie up briefly, then move on for the next boat.

Our take as floating people
Our honest steer: this is a night to watch, not to sail into. The water is cold and fully dark, the Amstel and the IJ fill with crowds, and illegal fireworks still get set off despite the ban, debris and all, while the traffic that is out tends to be slower, darker and less sober than usual. Setting off fireworks yourself, including from a boat, is not allowed, so there is no take-the-boat-out-and-light-some-up version of this. If you want the view from the water, find a quiet quay well away from the crush, keep your lights on and your speed down, and treat it as a careful late-night potter, not a party on the Amstel. Plenty of people have a better night watching from a bridge with their feet on dry land.

Good to know
Can you go out on a boat on New Year's Eve in Amsterdam?
There is no organised event and no blanket boating ban we could confirm, so you can be on the water, but it is a high-risk night: cold, dark, crowded on the Amstel and the IJ, and with illegal fireworks still about. If you go, keep your lights on, your speed down and well clear of the crowds, and check the City and port channels first.
Is it legal to set off fireworks from a boat in Amsterdam?
No. Amsterdam has banned private fireworks citywide since 2021, and a national consumer ban took effect on 1 August 2026, so for the 2026/27 turn of the year only category F1 novelties like sparklers are legal anywhere. Setting off anything more, including from a boat, is not allowed.
Where do people watch the fireworks from the water?
The Amstel around the Magere Brug is the traditional spot, with more crowds along the IJ near Centraal Station and the Oosterdok. All of them get very busy, so they are places to keep well clear of by boat rather than head into.
Is there an official New Year's Eve event in Amsterdam?
On land, yes: the free Electric Fireworks light and laser show on Museumplein, roughly 22:00 to 00:30 with a midnight countdown. There is nothing official on the water.

More on the water
We list this as an event we think is worth knowing about. We're not the organiser, and these details aren't official. City of Amsterdam and the signs on the quay have the final say, so give them the final word. More in our Terms.
