The gateway between Amsterdam's IJ and the open IJmeer and Markermeer, at Schellingwoude east of the city, the lock you pass to head out to the big water. A busy complex run by Rijkswaterstaat: pleasure craft use the Noordersluis on the north side, while the large southern lock is kept for commercial traffic.
How this lock runs
Locking around the clock: the small Prins Willem-Alexander chamber runs 24 hours, the three main chambers 06:00 to 22:00. Locking pauses at extreme water levels.

No locking when the water level is above NAP +0,30 m or below NAP -1,15 m, or when the difference between the outer and inner IJ exceeds 1,45 m.
The Prins Willem-Alexander lock is operated centrally from the south post, daily around the clock. The Noorder, Midden and Zuider locks are operated centrally from the north post, daily between 06:00 and 22:00. Between 22:00 and 06:00 one of the three locks is operated remotely from the south post; the other two are not operated.

Bij een waterstand van NAP+0,30m en of NAP-1,15m wordt niet geschut. Bij een verschil tussen het Buiten en Binnen IJ van meer dan 1,45m wordt niet meer geschut.
De Prins Willem-Alexandersluis wordt centraal bediend vanuit post Zuid, dagelijks tussen 00:00 en 24:00 uur. De Noorder-, Midden- en Zuidersluis worden centraal bediend vanuit post Noord, dagelijks tussen 06:00 en 22:00 uur. Tussen 22:00 en 06:00 uur wordt één van de 3 sluizen op afstand bediend vanuit post Zuid. De andere 2 sluizen worden dan niet bediend.
