What the statuses mean
These are the provinces' own categories, not ours. We never compute or infer a status.
- Safe to swim· zwemwater.nl
- No measure in force. The water met the standard at the last official test, which is as much as any test can tell you.
- Warning· zwemwater.nl
- A warning is in force, usually blue-green algae (blauwalg) or bacteria. Read the board at the waterside before you get in, and keep dogs and small children out.
- Negative swim advice· zwemwater.nl
- The province advises against swimming here. The water is not closed, but they are telling you not to. Treat it as a no.
- Swimming ban· zwemwater.nl
- Swimming is banned here (zwemverbod). The ban is official and enforceable, and the sign at the water will say so.
- Under investigation· zwemwater.nl
- Under investigation. Something came back off in a test and the province is retesting, so the water is unconfirmed rather than cleared.
- Outside bathing season· zwemwater.nl
- Outside the bathing season, so nobody is testing at the moment. The last status is not current, and no news is not good news here.
The record
The record we keep because the register keeps none.
Data and methodology
How we built it from official data to this page.
Test
The provinces test official bathing water through the season and publish a status for each location.
Match
We match each register location to the swim spot on our map.
Record
We keep every status change we see, because the register keeps no archive.
Show honestly
We never compute or infer a status. Not monitored is not the same as unsafe.

- About the data
- The provinces test official bathing water through the season and publish a status for each location. Outside the season nobody is testing, and the register says so.
- What we add
- We match each register location to the swim spot on our map and keep a record of every status change, because the register keeps none. We never compute or infer a status. A spot with no official status is not a monitored bathing water, which is not the same as unsafe.
